June 12, 2014- BR Report

Cotton and sugarcane farmers should irrigate standing crops keeping in view continuing dry weather spell, said a farmers’ advisory issued by Meteorological department here on Wednesday. The Met department in its 10-day farmers’ advisory, ending on June 20, said: “Due to prevailing dry weather and rising day time temperature, cotton and sugarcane farmers should irrigate the crops as per requirement.”

Warning farmers of pest/viral attacks at their standing crops, it advised farmers to take precautionary measures as more weeds are expected to grow in sugarcane crop after the recent rainy spell. Moreover, wheat grain should be stored properly to preserve its quality for a long time without any loss, especially during the monsoons’ moist conditions, the advisory said, adding that “Farmers of rain-fed areas, obtaining crop water through tube-wells, have also been advised to schedule the irrigation in accordance with the expected weather.”

The Met office said farmers of upper half of the country should complete sowing of Kharif crops in time so that crop may obtain normal growth. Weather in Punjab, it added, is expected to remain dry. However, a spell of light rainfall might hit the hilly parts of the province before June 20, besides dry weather is also expected in Sindh.

Giving its forecast about Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Met office said that mainly dry weather is expected in the province. It said light to moderate rainfall at isolated places is expected over most of the agricultural plains of the province. About Balochistan, the Meteorological department said that mainly dry weather is expected in the province. However, light rainfall is expected over northern parts of Balochistan, the advisory added.
