LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has said that livestock, dairy farming and agriculture are important sectors of national economy and Pakistan has been blessed by Allah Almighty with water, weather, human resource, livestock and other bounties. He said that Livestock and Dairy Development Department can hugely contribute to making the country economically self-sufficient however performance of this department has not been up to the required standard during the last 67 years.
He said that in spite of being a big country with regard to livestock and dairy development, Pakistan’s share in world trade is negligible. He said that Livestock and Dairy Development Department will have to come up to the expectations and no delay or laxity will be tolerated in the implementation of livestock and dairy development projects.He was addressing a high level meeting with regard to promotion of livestock and dairy development sector and future needs. The Chief Minister said that work is in progress speedily on the project of setting up of a state-of-the-art veterinary university in Bahawalpur and completion of this project will help in livestock and dairy development.
He expressed indignation over the delay and lack of an effective action plan towards the projects of livestock and dairy development and directed that a practicable and result-oriented action plan be presented to him within next ten days and experts should also be consulted for this purpose. He further said that extension services of livestock should be made more effective while practical measures should be taken for modernizing livestock farms as it is the need of the hour. Shahbaz Sharif said that livestock and dairy development sector can be strengthened through public-private partnership. He directed Chief Secretary to arrange the audit of diagnostic lab of livestock and these labs be outsourced. He further directed that due publicity of livestock helpline should be arranged through electronic media so that maximum number of people could benefit from this facility. He said that vaccination of livestock is essential for protecting them from diseases and solid measures be taken for 100 percent vaccination of livestock.
The Chief Minister further directed that effective steps should be taken for overcoming shortage of veterinary graduates. He warned that slackness and inefficiency on the part of officers and staff of Livestock and Dairy Development Department with regard to promotion of livestock and dairy farming will not be tolerated. He strongly reprimanded the concerned officers over the delay in livestock project in Khizarabad and said that non-completion of the project despite provision of resources is highly lamentable. He said that work on the project be accelerated and it should be completed as early as possible.
