Research in agri sector stressed

LAHORE: Punjab University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran has said there is a need to focus on agri sector and research.

He was addressing an inaugural session of three-day international conference ‘Stress Biology and Biotechnology and Challenges and Management’ organised by PU Institute of Agricultural Sciences (IAGS) on Wednesday.

Pakistan Science Foundation Chairman Dr Khalil Ahmed Ibupoto, IAGS Director Prof Dr Saleem Haider, University of Toronto Prof Dr Munir Abu Haider, Prof Dr Kausar Abdullah Malik, faculty members and students were present.

The PU said the University of Agriculture Faisalabad was playing an important role for the development of agricultural sector and the Punjab University was supporting research in agriculture. Dr Khalil Ahmed lauded PU IAGS for its efforts to boost agriculture sector in Pakistan.

Dr Saleem Haider said Pakistan was facing many serious challenges in agriculture including environmental changes, poor agri-marketing system, problems of farmers, low quality pesticides and electricity.

Meanwhile, the university has issued date-sheet for BS (Four Years Programme) 5th Semester examination 2014. The date-sheet is available at PU website

The university has also issued schedules for submission of admission fee and forms for BSc Nursing (4-years programme) Annual Examination 2014. The last date for submission of admission forms with single fee is 2-6-2014 while the forms can be submitted with double fee till 3-6-2014. The commencement date of BSc Nursing (4-years programme) 1st and 3rd year Annual Examination 2014 is June 16 while BSc Nursing (4-years programme) 2nd and 4th year Annual Examination 2014 will commence from June 17.

SINGING CONTEST HELD: An interdepartmental singing competition was organised by the Punjab University Directorate of Students Affairs. Students presented Sufiana, Arifana Kalam of renowned Sufi poets Baba Fareed, Mian Muhammad Baksh, Baba Bulleh Shah and national songs. In national songs competition students including Ayesha Anwar got 1st position, Mehr-un-Nisa bagged 2nd position and Hafiz Shaista Tanveer and Umer Hayat shared 3rd position. In Sufiana and Arifana Kalam competitions Ghufran Chishti from College of Art & Design got 1stposition, Ali Hassan Raza from Institute of Communication Studies 2nd position, Sana Ghaus from Hailey College of Banking & Finance got 3rd position while Qasim Ali from Law College Gujranwala Campus clinched an appreciation award.
