(APP) Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah has directed the Fisheries Department to expedite transfer of Korangi Fish Harbour to the provincial government as per spirit of the 18th Amendment. According to a handout issued on Wednesday the Chief Minister chairing a meeting to review the affairs related to fisheries department said since implementation of 18th Amendment in the Constitution, Korangi Fish Harbour was supposed to be handed over to Sindh government.
He regretted that despite passage of substantial time, the harbour was neither being turned functional nor transferred to the provincial government. He on the occasion directed that the Karachi Fish Harbour must also be exempted from deduction of Fish Export Development Fund during export of the product.
The issue, he said must be taken up with concerned federal government agencies and in case of differences these must be taken to the Council of Common Interests (CCI). Discussing the potential of fishing in the province, being located on sea belt and with maximum numbers of different sizes of lakes, the Sindh Chief Minister said there was need to take advantage of the Europe Union decision to lift ban on Pakistani fish.
He directed the management of Provincial Fisheries Department to prepare and submit short term and long term development strategies with a view to bring considerable improvement and development of inland and marine fish harbours and enabling them to enhance the fishing export. He said a consultancy firm of international repute must be hired to conduct an extensive survey, prepare feasibility report of short term and long term not more than 04 years projects and submit the same to Planning and Development department within shortage possible time, so that same could be implemented accordingly.
The Chief Minister Sindh directed the officers to also focus on improving quality of sea-food products through application of best practice with specific reference to hygienic condition and proper packing methodology. He said that PPP government has always taken care of fishermen community and spent substantial amount for their welfare.
The Chief Minister Sindh while discussing about the current bottlenecks being experienced by the management of Karachi Fish Harbour directed them to submit their demand for further releases and assured that same would be provided to them in priority basis. Qaim also directed authorities to approach and communicate all details to the Pakistan foreign office about the fishermen of the Sindh who have been arrested and jailed by Indian authorities.
Presiding a meeting to review the performance of fisheries department at the CM House Karachi, he said matter related to early release of the fishermen must be urgently taken up and the procedure must be expedited. He said that PPP govt is fully conscious of the plight of the affected families and consider it to be a human right issue. Minister for Fisheries & Livestock Jam Khan Shoro, Additional Chief Secretary Development Wasim Ahmed, Secretary Livestock & Fisheries Zaffar Iqbal Shaikh, Secretary to CM Rai Sikandar, Secretary Finance Sohail Rajput Chairman and MD Karachi Fish Harbour and DG Fish Harbour attended the meeting. Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Jam Khan Shoro said that area of operation of Karachi Fish Harbour needed to be expanded.
