The poultry prices in the city have shown decline in a couple of days and because of Eid-ul-Azha they may fall further in upcoming days. The price of chicken meat in the city is between Rs 200 to Rs 230 per kg while a couple of weeks back, it was being sold at Rs 280 to Rs 290 per kg. Traders expected further decline in coming days and said it might reach less than to Rs 200 per kg.
The sharp decline in chicken rates was attributed by the traders to decreasing demand as Eid-ul-Azha is just one day away as well as bulk supply from farms in the market which is pushing its prices down. It is a general trend in Pakistan that overwhelming majority of consumers purchase chicken meat in bulk and stores in refrigerators actor and fridges.
As the eve of Eid-u-Azha is fast approaching, people prefer to keep their refrigerators and fridges empty to store meat of sacrificial animals. Every year, the consumption of chicken meat drops considerably after Eid-ul-Azha. The retailer expressed hope that reduction of prices may attract customers who preferred chicken meat to other ones. “Selling chicken at this level is not attractive for the breeder but for staying in business, it is necessary,” said a chicken meat dealer Another retailer of chicken meat said that the price might not decline from that present level because of higher production cost as well as wedding season. He said that though people are quite happy because of lower chicken prices. Courtesy: Business Recorder
