August 18, 2013

Ukraine, which plans to raise grain exports to an all-time high in 2013/14, had sold 2.4 million tonnes abroad as of August 16, 34 percent more than at the same period in 2012/13, the Agriculture Ministry said on Friday. The volume included 926,000 tonnes of wheat, 981,700 tonnes of barley and 487,000 tonnes of maize, it said in a statement.

The former Soviet republic has said that its expected a record grain crop of 57.1 million tonnes would allow it to boost exports to at least 28 million tonnes this season which runs from July to June. The US Agriculture Department has estimated Ukrainian exports at an even higher 30 million tonnes. Agriculture Minister Mykola Prysyazhnyuk told Reuters this week that exports could rise to more than 2 million tonnes this month from 1.2 million tonnes in July. Courtesy Reuters
