LAHORE: The Punjab government has decided to give 80 percent subsidy on the installation cost of tube wells run on solar energy panels.

The announcement has been made under the new energy policy and following proposal in the budget to convert tube wells to solar energy gradually.

Chairing a high-level meeting in the agriculture secretary’s committee room, Agriculture Minister Dr Farrukh Javed said that the Punjab government would give 80 percent subsidy on the installation cost of solar-powered tube wells. He said the government would provide solar energy panels to farmers having less than 12.5 acers. It was proposed in the meeting that solar panels be installed in particular districts of Punjab where water table was between 50 to 80 feet. The minister said the government was planning to initially install 100 solar energy supported tube wells on an experimental basis. Courtesy Daily Times
