LAHORE: Sugarcane crushing season 2012-13 has ended, however, small farmers of the crop are still being humiliated by the sugar mill owners as they are running from pillar to post to their legitimate payments, Daily Times learnt here on Saturday.
The millers are busy in ruthless exploitation of the poor small sugarcane growers, which comprise around 90 percent of the sugarcane growing community of Punjab. Sugarcane Growers Association Convener Javed Malik told Daily Times that he was receiving complaints from all four corners of Punjab province regarding humiliation of farmers by the mills managements on demand of their payments, while big growers have got their all payments against sugarcane supply to the mills. He said some of the cash payments receipts (CPRs) were due to December 2012, but payments have not been made so far by the mills, instead the millers are busy in abusing the rights of poor farmers through the middlemen in connivance of the mill managements.
