Temporarily Increased

Water inflow in the four live rivers has temporarily increased after widespread rains occurred in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab including Islamabad, Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, Metrological department said here on Tuesday. It said strong western system is affecting upper parts of the country and likely to persist for next 24 hours. This strong weather system is expected to generate more rains with snowfall over the hills in upper parts of the country during the period.

It said water inflow in river Indus has increased from 20,600 cusecs to 37,200 cusecs at Tarbela, from 11,374 cusecs to 24,800 cusecs in river Jehlum at Mangla and in river Chenab from 6,000 to 25,000 cusecs. According to sources, the Indus River System Authority (IRSA) reduced water outflow from Tarbela dam from 40,000 to 30,000 cusecs as the current spell of rains has greatly met irrigation needs of the standing crops. They said the water regulatory body is providing 50,000 cusecs water to Punjab and 40,000 cusecs to Sindh province for watering the winter crops including wheat, grams, mustards, canola, oil-seeds, sunflower, maize, barleys, vegetables, and fodder.

Meanwhile, the met office has forecast widespread thunderstorm/rain with scattered heavy snowfall over the hills in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir. Scattered thunderstorm/rain with isolated heavy falls and snowfall over the hills may occur over lower Khyber Pakhtunkhwa northern Punjab. Thunderstorm/rain with snowfall over the hills is likely to occur at isolated places of Quetta, Zhob divisions and southern Punjab. While mainly cold weather is expected over rest of the country. Under the influence of this strong weather system water flows in river Kabul, Indus, Jhelum, Chenab and Ravi may also rise.
