The Punjab government has fixed wheat procurement target for FY 2013-14 at 4 million tons to beef up its wheat stocks. Punjab contributes nearly 80 percent of the total wheat production. Senior Advisor Sardar Zulfiqar Ali Khan Khosa presided over a high-level meeting here on Monday to finalise arrangements for next year’s wheat procurement campaign.
Special Assistant to CM, Manshaullah Butt, Secretaries of finance, agriculture, food and industry departments, Member P&D, Director food department and other senior officials attended the meeting. The meeting decided to purchase 3.5 million bardana (gunny bags) for the FY 2013-14 wheat procurement campaign of which 60 percent would be polypropylene bags and 40 percent jute bags.
The meeting also reviewed the present stocks of wheat with the provincial food department. Food Secretary Irfan Ali informed the meeting that due to Punjab government’s prudent policies, wheat is available in abundance. The meeting expressed its satisfaction over the available wheat stocks. Punjab government has made arrangements for sowing wheat crop over 16.8 million acres of land to produce 19 million tons of wheat next year. The sowing which is in full swing presently is likely to be completed by middle of next month.
