Rice procurement by govt touches record level of 35.02 mn tonnes
NEW DELHI, Oct 22, 2012: Rice procurement by Centre reached record 35.02 million tonnes during the 2011-12 marketing year that ended last month, due to the risen buying in non-traditional states like Chattisgarh and Bihar after witnessed an all-time high output.
During the 2010-11 marketing year (October-September), Centre bought 34.19 million tonnes, said the Food Ministry’s data.
Out of the overall rice purchases during 2011-12, 7.7 million tonnes was purchased from Punjab, Andhra Pradesh at 7.5 million tonnes, Chhattisgarh at 4.11 million tonnes, Uttar Pradesh at 3.35 million tonnes and Orissa at 2.84 million tonnes.
Rice procurement in Punjab and Andhra Pradesh was poor and the purchases in non-traditional states such as Chhattisgarh, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh has been higher as compared to the previous year.
Rice procurement in Chhattisgarh climbed to 4.11 million tonnes during the 2011-12 marketing year as against 3.73 million tonnes.
Likewise, procurement in Uttar Pradesh increased to 3.35 million tonnes from 2.55 million tonnes.
