August 25, 2012: Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has said Punjab Agricultural and Meat Company (Pamco) has been established to ensure provision of quality and hygienic meat to the citizens at affordable rates. He stressed the need for early operationalisation of the institution and directed that the Outsource Committee should complete the work of outsourcing the contracts of Pamco by November 10.
He also directed shifting of the cattle market of Kot Kamboh to Shahpur Kanjran within two days. The Chief Minister was presiding over a high level meeting to review matters relating to Pamco, here on Friday. Senator Pervaiz Rashid, Members Assembly, Arshad Jatt, Rao Kashif Raheem, Chairman P&D, Secretaries of Agriculture, Livestock, Finance and Local Government departments, District Co-ordination Officer Lahore and other concerned officials were present on the occasion.
Addressing the meeting, the CM said that Punjab government was taking effective steps for the betterment of livestock sector. He said the basic aim of setting up of Pamco was to ensure provision of quality meat based on hygienic principles to the citizens as well as earning precious foreign exchange for the country through its export.
He said a most modern slaughterhouse had been constructed at Shah Pur Kanjaran to come up to the international standard of meat. He directed that separate agreements should be made with the concerned companies regarding export of meat products, and said small animals should also be slaughtered along with big animals at this slaughterhouse.
He directed that indiscriminate action should be taken against illegal abattoirs while registration work of mutton shops should be further expedited, saying arrangements should be made to supply meat in different areas of the provincial metropolis through mobile meat shops, which should operate under Pamco.
He further directed Secretary Local Government and DCO Lahore to make planning for constructing a multi-purpose commercial plaza at the vacant land of cattle market so that the income of district government could be further augmented. He warned that any further delay with regard to the deadline fixed for outsourcing the contracts of Pamco would not be tolerated.
The CM also expressed his extreme displeasure over the poor sanitary conditions on the road outside Pamco and directed that the system of sanitation be further upgraded while landscaping should also be carried out inside Pamco office. He said Pamco could be converted into a great source of income by running it on commercial basis therefore planning should be made for the capacity-building of the institution, keeping in view the future needs.
Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif ordered launching of a vigorous and effective awareness campaign regarding the project of Pamco among the masses. Later, the CM was given a detailed briefing by First Islamic Micro Finance Organisation of Pakistan aimed at the welfare and uplift of small farmers with lesser resources, upon which the CM ordered formation of a committee, under the chairmanship of P&D Chairman, which will finalise its recommendations within four days in this regard.
