DESPITE a huge subsidy on farm implements, and a vast network of extensive services employing thousands of field officers and workers, mechanised farming in Sindh remains largely a cherished dream.

Agriculture credit disbursement up 17 percent
April 24, 2012: Agricultural credit disbursement by banks surged by 17 percent on year-on-year basis to Rs 197.361 billion in the first nine months (July-March) of the current fiscal year (2011-12). In absolute terms, disbursement of credit to agriculture sector increased by over Rs 28.674 billion in July-March, 2012 as compared with total disbursement of Rs 168.687 billion in the same period of last fiscal year.

Pakistan, though a major citrus producer, is still lagging behind in modern techniques when it comes to enhancing the value of citrus exports. Only 10% of total production is exported, due to which citrus producers face severe financial constraints as it entails selling the produce locally; at lower prices.
