1m metric tons wheat procured

LAHORE (Thursday, April 29, 2010): Provincial Minister for Food, Malik Nadeem Kamran has said that the Food Department Punjab has so far provided more than one crore 90 lakh gunny bags to the cultivators whereas 10-lakh metric tons wheat has been procured under wheat procurement campaign 2010.

The Minister stated this while presiding over a meeting held to review the ongoing wheat procurement campaign here on Wednesday. The Minister said that foolproof arrangements have been made by the Food Department for ensuring transparency in the wheat procurement campaign. He said that the monitoring committees, which also include representatives of farmers and set up at procurement centres level, are playing an active role in this regard. He further stated that no complaint has so far been received from these committees regarding shortage or non-availability of gunny bags.

The Minister said that divisional and districts officers of Food Department are closely monitoring wheat procurement campaign as well as supply of gunny bags to the farmers. The Minister further disclosed that in order to achieve the wheat procurement target of 50 lakh tons, the Food Department has arranged gunny bags for 53 lakh tons wheat.
